「芸術の神はディティールに宿る」という言葉にも似て、文章の知性もやはりディティールに宿る。テキストの中の、ちょっとした部分に気を配れているかどうかが、知性のあるなしを分ける分水嶺だ。

例えば「送りがな」をどうするかというのがある。「うりあげ」という言葉があるが、これの送りがなは「売上」「売上げ」「売り上げ」と3パターンもある。よりオーセンティックなものを選ぶなら「売上」となるのだが、「売上げ」という言葉も広く流布している。あるいは、最近では曖昧さを回避する風潮が強いので「売り上げ」と書くのもおかしくない。どれを選択するかは、全体とのバランスの中ではかられるべきだが、一つ言えるのは、こうした送りがなに無自覚な文章には知性が感じられないということだ。

他にも、「おれ」という一人称を「おれ」と書くか「オレ」と書くか「俺」と書くかでニュアンスは大きく異なってくる。どれを書こうとかまわないのだが、大切なのは、そこに気を遣えているかどうかだ。

他にも、数字の選択というものがある。数字を漢字で書くかアラビア数字で書くかによって、その意味するところは大きく異なってくるし、アラビア数字を選んだ場合には、今度はそれを全角で書くか半角で書くかという選択がある。そういう細かな選択の一つ一つを疎かにしないことが、文章に知性というものを宿らせていく唯一にして絶対の方法である。
